Fulton, Robert
(14 nov. 1765, condado de Lancaster, Pa., EE.UU.–24 feb. 1815, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Inventor e ingeniero estadounidense. Hijo de inmigrantes irlandeses, estudió pintura con Benjamin West en Londres, pero pronto cambió hacia la ingeniería. Después de diseñar un sistema para vías fluviales interiores, trató sin éxito de interesar a los gobiernos de Francia y Gran Bretaña en sus prototipos de submarinos (ver Nautilus) y de torpedos. En 1801 Robert R. Livingston le encargó la construcción de un barco de vapor, y en 1807 el Clermont de Fulton hizo en 32 horas el viaje río arriba por el Hudson, desde la ciudad de Nueva York hasta Albany, rebajando en 64 horas el tiempo usual del viaje de vela. El Clermont se transformó en el primer barco de vapor comercialmente exitoso de EE.UU. Con posterioridad diseñó varios barcos de vapor, como el primer buque de guerra de vapor (1812). Fue uno de los integrantes de la comisión que recomendó la construcción del canal Erie.
